Playa Tamarindo in Costa Rica is quite a long beach which has superb waves for surfing near the mouth of the estuary. It has strong currents on a falling tide and has two breaks suitable for advanced surfers. These two points are named Pico Pequeño and El Estero. There are other breaks along the beach which suit less experienced surfers. During the months of November and December you can expect waves to reach heights of up to 12 feet.
Waves have a sloppy quality and come in from both the left and the right giving the right amount of power for a fun ride. This beach is quite well known and is easily accessible through the hotel strip. Best times for surfing would be during the week when it is less busy.
The beach is also home to some Leatherback Turtles who come to nest from November to April. This provides a fabulous tourist attraction along with other beach activities including snorkeling, diving, horseback riding, zip-lining, and body surfing.
Playa Tamarindo along with most beaches in Costa Rica is generally clean and well kept by local businesses and government run organizations. With crystal clear waters and beautiful natural surroundings Tamarindo offers an idyllic spot for a holiday.
Surfing conditions are near perfect and there are plenty of hotels in the vicinity which are both affordable and good quality. Although the sea here has a sandy bed, there are places with barely submerged rocks and with the strong currents, it is advisable to take care when swimming and surfing in some areas.
