Salsa Brava is a haven for surfers. It is the perfect place for the expert surfer or those with kamikaze tendencies due to the dangerous rip tides, strong currents and shallow reef. It is considered the heaviest wave in Costa Rica and is for this reason that Salsa Brava or “Angry Sauce” creates a fantastic barrel one after the other. Because of these strong currents it is not suitable for swimming in these waters. Salsa Brava is one of those beaches that should be left strictly for the professional surfers. If you want to visit here and take part in other activities you can indulge in the likes of mountain biking, horseback tours or kayaking.
There is a reef coral break here which peaks on the right and waves are fast, powerful and hollow. Rides are quite short measuring less than 50 meters normally but can sometimes last as long as 150 meters. The swell comes in from the east and the wind from the south. One of the major attractions here is the fact that waves can reach as high as 16 feet or more. It is quite easy to find and is a busy location for the super surfer wishing to show off his or her moves.
