Just to the north of Puerto Viejo, lies the beach of Playa Negra which offers sloppy waves for surfers of any experience. It is a 15km beach which is quite empty during the week so is perfect for catching the breaks.
Surfing conditions here are quite tame and waves generally only last under 50 meters but sometimes when conditions are great they can last as long as 100 meters. The swell comes in from the east and the wind direction is westerly to south westerly. Waves are known to be as high as five feet and you can surf here on any tide. It is a great beach for the beginner to practice his or her moves and does not generally get too busy even on the weekends.
