Playa Ostional is located to the North of Nosara. It is a world famous beach for the number of sea turtles there. It can be difficult to reach this beach in the rainy season and access will require a 4 wheel drive from Junquillal or Nosara. One of the main attractions of this beach is the nesting of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles from July to November. In times of heavy rain (Sept. to Nov.) sometimes the road is closed because the rivers overflow.
It is part of a national wildlife refuge since 1982, one of the most important in the world for the Lora (Olive Ridley) turtle nesting. Also, sporadically, leatherback turtles, green sea turtles of the Pacific and Black turtles can be seen in Ostional. Of all turtles, the star of Ostional is the Olive Ridley, which, once a month, produces the so called “arrivada” (arrival), when hundreds or thousands of sea turtles come to lay their eggs in a span of 3 to 4 days.
|Surf Break Type||Beach Break|
The beach is not suitable for swimming due to strong waves and rip-tides but you will find surfers coming here for the classic quality of waves. The frequency of surfing is consistent and you can expect good conditions for about 250 days of the year. There is a great beach break here with waves coming from the left and right making it suitable for any surfer with any amount of experience. Waves are hollow, powerful and fast and have a normal length of 50-150 meters. If you are lucky enough to be there on a good day, you could expect wave lengths of up to 300 meters.
The swell direction comes from the North West, West and South West directions and the wind directions are normally South East, East or North East. The best time to surf is during mid-to-high tide and you should not be surprised to see waves reaching heights of over ten feet.
Both the lodging and restaurants are scarce, since this beach depends on Nosara for businesses. We recommend that you sleep here if you want to spend the night watching the arrivals of turtles or if you want to surf early in the morning, where there will definitely be very few people and lots of good waves.
Also close by, there are hotels of a higher level of those that are in the village, where you can spend a few days in full tranquility, immersed in the middle of the jungle and enjoy the gifts of this beach.
