Playa Ostional is located to the North of Nosara. It is a world famous beach for the number of sea turtles there. It can be difficult to reach this beach in the rainy season and access will require a 4 wheel drive from Junquillal or Nosara. One of the main attractions of this beach is the nesting of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtles from July to November.
The beach is not suitable for swimming due to strong waves and rip-tides but you will find surfers coming here for the classic quality of waves. The frequency of surfing is consistent and you can expect good conditions for about 250 days of the year. There is a great beach break here with waves coming from the left and right making it suitable for any surfer with any amount of experience. Waves are hollow, powerful and fast and have a normal length of 50-150 meters. If you are lucky enough to be there on a good day, you could expect wave lengths of up to 300 meters.
The swell direction comes from the North West, West and South West directions and the wind directions are normally South East, East or North East. The best time to surf is during mid-to-high tide and you should not be surprised to see waves reaching heights of over ten feet.
