Along the Guanacaste coast on the Nicoya Peninsula, lies the stunning sandy beach of Playa Guiones. With the abundant jungle backing to this beach, it's no wonder that a couple of hundred meters of the beach are reserved as part of the Ostional Wildlife Refuge. This beautiful spotless beach has been awarded a 'Blue Flag of Ecology' for being one of the most ecologically well managed beaches on the planet.
The quiet, lazy town of Playa Guiones provides a laid back, relaxed spot for vacations and it is immensely popular with snorkelers and surfers alike. The beach here is perfect for couples or for people who just want to chill out.
For surfers, the regional classic surf is suitable for those with any degree of experience and the consistent beach breaks have become a huge draw among the surfer crowd. With waves coming from a left and right direction and a completely sandy sea bed, it provides perfect fun rides for the less experienced. Wave lengths will normally range from between 50 and 150 meters but have been known to stretch as long as 300 meters.
The swell direction varies between north westerly, westerly and south westerly and the wind comes in from the east. Waves here can reach heights of over ten feet. The surfing here can be done on any tide which makes it a popular choice of location.
This beach is quite easy to locate and is very near to Playa Nosara. It is usually very quiet here during the week but the weekend crowd is also much less than other surfing spots so it makes a good choice if you are looking to get some surfing done in peace. Another reason to visit Playa Guiones is the amazing ocean views and the beautiful sunsets which are a popular draw for honeymooners.
