Backwash Bay in Matapalo offers regional classic waves for the experienced surfer. The beach here is quite steep which makes the waves great for long boarding. The breaks are quite exposed due to the offshore winds which blow in from the north or north east.
You can expect powerful, fun waves lasting for up to 200 meters on a good day but normal length is usually around 100 meters. The southerly swell is best, especially on a low tide. This is a great location for the avid surfer but can be quite dangerous due to the rocks and riptides so it is probably best left for the experienced. It is a truly paradisiacal beach, with wild life all over and the stunning Corcovado National Park just behind the mountains.
